This tracking server is hanging on connection. Bad for business... yours and ours. People think that we are down when the server does not immediately return failure. I can handle occasional analytics loss, but you really must get a system in place whereby there is no user-facing effect when a server is down. |

Hi,
There was an issue with a network interface on the Amazon Cloud server that this server uses. We changed the IP address and re-booted which resolved the issue.
We apologise for this and may consider moving this server to another host.
There is a way of embedding the tracking code so that your page load is not effected in the event of a server/network fail. You basically place the code just before the </body> tag and position the chat image using a DIV. Your page then fully loads before the tracking call is made. Please see: http://www.parkersoft.co.uk/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=6417

[1] You've got to have sensors monitoring your production servers: this was an 8-hour outage that as far as I know was detectable from anywhere in NA. If I were unaware of a problem for 8 hours, I'm pretty sure I would lose my job. Again, it is not the problem, or the root cause of the problem, but the lack of monitoring that worries me most. [2] We use the GoGrid Windows cloud. It serves us well. Then again, we monitor it every 15 seconds.
[3] Any synchronous load of the tracking code will be vulnerable to this problem. We have a Javascript-rich web application and the delay will be felt no matter what.

We do have monitoring in place on all our servers. This montitors connectivity and the application itself (chat interface, client connections, WhosOn gateway).
However the timeout issue was caused by and issue on the Amazon cloud on this particular server, and was not something we could control.
Daniel will be posting an asynchronous tracking code sample in the forum, which would not be effected by any outage.

Any update on this? We would really like to keep the embedded code but the performance issues are causing some major headache.
Thanks |
