This is my 5th WhosOn install and I'm experienced with the product. Trying to sell to a client of mine and having difficulties with the install.
For some reason, on this particular Windows 2003 SBS Server, the product installs fine and I can create the database. The charts & reports function, as well as the web chat and web client.. However no WhosOn PC clients including the one on the server can "fully" connect to the server. It connects successfully with no errors, but lists no sites, even though a site exists.. Also in the main page of the admin, all the statistics such as "server build" are blank... Even with the service running. Additionally, some service descriptions are missing the first character of the service description. Strange. I tried uninstalling, reinstalling both WhosOn and SQL Express 2005 a few times, removing all the files, DBs and registry entries and couldn't get anywhere. I've spent 4 hours and am getting nowhere. Any ideas what might be causing this? Would like to get this solved so I can get the client to try and buy. Many thanks. Here are some relevant screenshots: ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Hi,
It looks like the Client (& Admin) cannot connect to the WhosOn server on port 8011. Could any other apps be listening on this port - or is there a firewall blocking local access? Try closing WhosOn then doing a netstat -a to list all listening ports to see if anything else is using port 8011.

Hi Steve -
Unfortunately nothing else is listening on TCP/8011, no firewalls in place on this server. Once I shutdown the WhosOn Server, 8011 is free and is not listed in a netstat -an. Anything else obvious I can try? If it's easier support can RDP in to the box. Let me know in an e-mail (I emailed your support box) and I will send back all the relevant details. |

Also, I can telnet into the service on port 8011 when it's running. I get:
@HELLO:WhosOn 5.2.780 February 2010 |

Also I will note that the site directory in my WhosOn/DB directory is empty as well. My one and only site is www.axco.com. I see the folder, but there are no files in it.

Hi,
Have any default ports been changed in WhosOn? Open the Program Options - Remote Access tab. Check the Client port is 8011.
There only other thing that would prevent the Client from connecting to the WhosOn server is security software. I've seen some security products that allow the initial connection but then block some of the messages. Can you disable any anti-virus or security software and test if the client connects.
Apart from that there is no obvious reason why it wouldnt work. Its not an issue we have in the software. Try installing the service pack to ensure all DLL's are registered correctly.
Can you contact the support desk via phone. We can take a look at the server from via a remote support session. If you provide us with the public IP of the server we can attempt a connection from here to see what messages are not being received.

Steve,
I went ahead and changed the port on the client/server to 8015 and it still connects but shows no sites. The administrator continues to display no stats as in the above picture. I will detect when the services are not running though. When I changed the server to 8015, I also tried to connect to 8011 via the client and got "connection refused" like one would expect. Weird stuff. Thanks. |

Just tested the Silverlight client, same behavior as the regular client. Connects, no data present, no sites listed.
The basic webclient works and we are getting data from visitors, etc. |

Another observation is that when I change a site's chat properties, they do not reflect in the actual chat window.
For instance, I changed the chat "theme" colors, and it doesn't take effect. Same with chat opening strings, etc. |

Ok - there is clearly some issue with the WhosOn server not sending messages on the TCP connections. Please contact the support desk directly so we can assist in finding the cause.
