I'm often asked on support what the best way to move a WhosOn installation is; I've detailed the best practices here:

1. Stop WhosOn services on source machine.

2. Copy database (skip this if you are using the built in database)
(SQL: backup / restore, or detach / attach, depending on what database you are using on the target machine; backup / restore is usually best. Backup / restore also has the advantage of not altering anything on the source server, meaning you can roll back if necessary.

3. Copy files from the data path. This path defaults to c:\documents and settings\all users\application data\parker software\WhosOnV6 on XP / 2000 / 2003 and C:\ProgramData\Parker Software\WhosOnV6 on Vista / 2008. Put these files on the target server, in the same location.  (the paths end V4 for a version 4 installation, and V5 for a version 5 installation).

5. Restore the database on the target server.

6. Install WhosOn on the new machine, registering with your existing serial and registration information.

7. Check that the IP / DNS settings are still correct.

8. If you were using logfiles, check the logfile paths on each site are still accessible.

9. Test chat, gateway etc.

10. Unregister the serial from the old server with Help -> Unregister.

That should be all that is necessary.

On Step 3, if you are moving from Windows 2003 to Windows 2012 the file paths would change. I feel this would cause issues, but wanted to check if that's the case or if the change in file path would not make a difference?

Yes the file paths would change, in 2012 the path would be: C:\ProgramData\Parker Software\WhosOnV6
This wouldn't cause any issue though

Ok. So after the software is installed on the new 2012 host, I would copy the files from the 2003 server and location to the new ProgramData folder, correct?
